Winter in Valle Aurina: Skiing at Speikboden & Klausberg

Reintal, Weissenbacher Tal, Mühlwalder Tal and the rear Valle Aurina in Kasern. Four valleys, different in character, but all fantastically beautiful and with wonderful cross-country ski trails. And in the middle: Fronza! The four trails mentioned can be reached by car in 10 to 30 minutes. A varied experience of nature on perfectly maintained trails. A total of well over 30 kilometres of cross-country trails await you.

Here in Valle Aurina, winter is the time for unlimited tobogganing fun. In Valle Aurina and its side valleys, numerous well-maintained and secured tracks await you. And as a reward for the sometimes longer ascent, there is usually a cosy rest in a hearty hut at the top. A little tip if you don’t have a toboggan: many of these huts lend you the right vehicle for the fast descent for a small fee.

The Valle Aurina with guaranteed snow is a paradise for winter hiking fans. Countless hiking trails and climbs, in the shade or on the sunny side as you wish, invite you to a leisurely winter hike under a blue sky. Why not round off the holiday experience with an ice skating party? Several ice rinks are waiting for you here in Valle Aurina. In the municipality of Prettau there is an ice rink at the Snowpark Prettau in Kasern and also a natural ice rink in the village of Prettau. You can rent ice skates in Kasern if you want. There is also a natural ice rink in Weissenbach, some of which is floodlit until 21:00. The artificial ice rink in Lutago is open daily in winter from 9:00 to 22:00. A floodlight system is also in use there.

Only 7 km into the valley from Lutago (with valley station in Steinhaus) the extremely family-friendly Klausberg ski area with its 33 kilometres of slopes awaits all skiing and snowboarding fans. Rustic ski huts, perfectly maintained slopes and modern lifts make the hearts of ski fans race. Our recommendation: during some weeks, for example at the beginning of the ski season, the ski pass is free for our guests. That’s a great reason for a skiing holiday in Valle Aurina, isn’t it?

Do you know curling? No? Then it’s about time you got to know it. Basically, it’s about placing your own sports equipment (the “stone”) as close as possible to a small disc (the “house”), which is located at the other end of the ice rink. A sport that is a lot of fun and that you can also practise comfortably while enjoying a delicious hot drink. There are several ice rinks in Valle Aurina where you can borrow a set of curling stones. So, put on the warmest clothes you have and you’re good to go.

Jingle bells, and not only in the run-up to Christmas. Herbert’s riding stables, here in our area, offers carriage and horse-drawn sleigh rides throughout the winter. A nostalgic and wildly romantic experience of nature that horse fans should not miss.

When it comes to skiing in the Dolomites, there is a ski safari or a ski carousel that you should have experienced: the world-famous Sellaronda! The beautiful panoramic tour around the Sella massif is over 40 kilometres long (24 kilometres of which by cable car). You don’t have to be a pro to do the circuit, but it is a bit time-consuming, so you should start early in the morning to get back to the starting point.

Breathe in fresh, cool air, eyes turned to the East. Wait until the sun hesitantly comes out of its hiding place and gently kisses the world awake with its initially red light. Watching a sunrise in the mountains is something you must have experienced. But is it possible without the effort of climbing up at night? This is possible on the Speikboden.
